DIY – Quick and Easy Beach inspired candles

By Shannon - Little Flamingo | November 15, 2011

These beach inspired candles are so cute and a cinch to make! Use them for kids birthday parties or add little signs to the top of the candles to create gorgeous little accents for weddings, christenings or even on your dinner table!

You will Need:
Candles
Small Urchin shells

When selecting the right combo make sure the hole will be the right size to fit your candles snugly. The hole of the shell should be a little smaller than the thickness of your candles. Oh, and if you are going to use them on top of your cake make sure you sterilise your shells first.

What Next?
Carefully twist the candle into the hole in the sea urchin shell, making sure you twist in one direction only. As the candle goes into the shell you should get a small thread on the candle just like a screw has, this will help to secure it in place. If you are worried or want to add a little more stability, dab some hot glue on the inside of the shell. Below if you look carefully, you can see the marks the twist action should make on your candle…

And underneath looks like this…

Wasn’t that easy and aren’t they cute! These candles can be a little fragile and it’s best to secure them especially when the candles are lit. Put them in sand, pop them on the table or set them in your cake! I can even see these at a Mermaid party!
If you would like to send us some pics of your completed project we would love to see them! Happy Creating!

pink, white & croquembouche birthday!

By Shannon - Little Flamingo | November 7, 2011

If you follow Little Flamingo on Facebook you would have seen a sneak peek on Sunday of a delicious looking croquembouche from Summer’s birthday. Summer and Josh are getting married in just over a week (yay!) and she has been working so hard on all the details for their big day, that I wanted to create something a little special for her birthday.

With her love of croquembouche and the work Adriano Zumbo, An Adriano Zumbo croquembouche was the perfect surprise. Not only does this cake look amazing but it tastes divine! (a little tip though, the angel hair wrapped around the croquembouche will melt if it gets moisture to it, so be careful!)

It was an intimate celebration so the croquembouche took centre stage. Around the cake I kept everything very simple so as not to distract from this masterpiece of a cake! I added a few little touches like the Happy Birthday signs in glass bottles and made 2 little string banners to visually connect the drinks sections to the rest of the display.

As pink is one of Summer’s favourite colours, this was used throughout the table along with white and a few mirrors (also on Summer’s list of favourite things).

Gorgeous striped straws in pink and raspberry from Emerald & Ella in little glass bottles sat on their own mirrored coaster defining their own space and adding a little more dimension to the table.

Spotted and striped glassware was used along with striped white birthday candles in little urchin shells.

To finish off, I hand stamped wooden forks (also emerald & ella) with “summer’s b’day” and laid them on complementing napkins, ready for the guest of honour to arrive!

Happy Birthday Sum! I hope you had a fabulous birthday!! x
